Harlandale High School, Harlandale ISD, San Antonio, TX ELA/Reading Specialist/Dyslexia Designee', 2005-present
I am a native from San Antonio, and graduated from John Marshall High School in 1983. I have always been an avid reader and writer even though I have been diagnosed with dyslexia.
I was fortunate to have wonderful teachers who helped me learn to read and write despite my learning difference. Because of these caring teachers from my youth, I longed to be a teacher. in fact, I have been teaching others since high school. I took over a 3rd grade Sunday School class full of wonderful, eager children.
It took me a while to make teaching my career full time. I earned a degree in hospitality management and worked in the hotel and restaurant industry on Galveston Island for 6 years. I decided i needed a change, so I packed my bags and sold everything I owned and embarked on a flight to West Germany with my cat.
After living oversees for one year I came back to the United States and moved to Miami in 1989. I worked and taught as I completed my degree and have never looked back. I've been teaching for over 19 years from preschool-upper division courses for Early Literacy Instruction. I made Harlandale High School my home 8 years ago. I'm proud to be a part of this wonderful, warm community, especially my students who have taught me as much or more as I have taught them over the years.
When I am not at HHS, I am taking care of my wonderful 11 year old daughter, who also is dyslexic and divide my time between tutoring her outside of school and working with my students after school with two organizations I sponsor, SHINE, an anti-bullying organization every Thursday, and The Anime Artists of Harlandale (every tuesday, open to fans and budding anime artists). We spend our weekends playing with our 3 dogs, 2 cats, and 2 ferrets, as well as visit parks, museums, or enjoy biking trails when the weather is cooperating.
Please do not hesitate to contact me at 210-400-0209. I look forward to working with your child to learn and love reading, English and writing.
